Rabat, Morocco – Cameroon qualified for the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations after defeating South Africa 2-1 in their Round of 16 match on Sunday evening.
The two teams met at the city stadium, in a tough match which the “Indomitable Lions” won thanks to their offensive effectiveness and continental experience.
Cameroon opened the scoring in the 34th minute through Junior Baptiste Chamadio, who capitalized on a perfectly placed cross from Bryan Mbomo inside the penalty area. He easily slotted the ball into the left corner of the net.

At the start of the second half, Cameroon succeeded in adding a second goal in the 47th minute. Christian Kovani rose to meet a cross inside the penalty area, heading a powerful header into the net.

— beIN SPORTS (@beINSPORTS) January 4, 2026 South Africa tried to get back into the game. In the 62nd minute, Samukelo Kabene fired a dangerous shot from inside the box, but the Cameroon goalkeeper made a brilliant save.
In the 71st minute, Christian Kovani missed a chance to score Cameroon’s third goal, as goalkeeper Ronwen Williams saved his powerful shot from inside the penalty area.
South Africa narrowed the gap in the 88th minute through Evidence Makgoba, who met Aubrey Modiba’s cross with a first-time shot into the net.
South Africa pressed hard in the final minutes in search of an equalizer, but Cameroon’s defense held firm until the final whistle, securing their place in the quarterfinals.
With this result, Cameroon will face Morocco in the quarter-finals. The Atlas Lions qualified at the expense of Tanzania in the round of 16.
