Cairo, Egypt – Press reports revealed on Tuesday that Ramadan Sobhi, a player for the Egyptian football club Pyramids FC, has been sentenced to one year in prison with hard labor. This comes after he was accused of forging an official document at a tourism and hotel institute in the Abu Nomros area of Giza Governorate.

According to the Egyptian newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm, the Giza Criminal Court sentenced Ramadan Sobhi to one year in prison with hard labor today. The court also sentenced the second defendant in the case, who impersonated the player to take exams in his place, to one year in prison with hard labor.

The court acquitted the third defendant of the charges against him, and sentenced the fourth defendant in absentia to 10 years in prison.

Events of the incident

The details of the incident date back to last May, when a person was caught taking the exam in place of Ramadan Sobhi, the Pyramids FC player, inside one of the tourism and hotel institutes in the Abu Nimras area of Giza Governorate.

During the hearing of the accused’s statements, he admitted to receiving financial compensation from the player in exchange for entering the examination committee and taking the test on his behalf, in an attempt to circumvent the legal procedures.

The complainant explained that the incident was discovered during a review of the identity documents within the committee. Discrepancies were found, prompting the institute’s administration to detain the accused, notify the security authorities, and file a report on the incident. This was done before referring the matter to the competent investigative authorities, who initiated investigations and took the necessary legal measures.
