Tehran, Iran – Iranian volleyball star Saber Kazemi died at the age of 26 after falling into a coma last month in Doha, according to Iranian state media.
The international player was preparing to participate this season with the Qatari club Al Rayyan.
The official Iranian news agency (IRNA) quoted the Iranian Football Federation as saying:
“The young left-handed star of Iranian volleyball passed away
in the early hours of Wednesday morning.”
Brain injury
IRNA explained that Kazemi suffered a brain injury in October
while in a swimming pool during his stay in Doha.
He was briefly hospitalized there before being transferred to Tehran.
He was declared brain dead shortly after the accident.
The circumstances of his injury remain unclear and mysterious.
Valuable sporting talent
Kazemi was born in Golestan province in northern Iran, where he will be buried.
Qasim Ali Barzmini, head of the sports and youth department in Golestan province, said:
“Saber Kazemi was a valuable sporting talent in the country,
and a beloved figure in Iranian volleyball.”
