Brussels, Belgium – European pressure is mounting on Meta, the owner of WhatsApp. This comes after the app was placed under regulatory scrutiny. The reason is the growing controversy surrounding artificial intelligence technologies, particularly services like ChatGPT, and the resulting concerns about the protection of user data within the European Union.

EU institutions are considering imposing new restrictions on data collection and sharing mechanisms. This comes as Brussels seeks to tighten oversight of tech giants, in line with digital markets and services laws. These laws aim to increase transparency and protect the digital privacy of European citizens.

Experts believe that any new European decisions could present Meta with difficult financial scenarios. These scenarios could include hefty fines or service restrictions. This threatens a portion of its advertising revenue and jeopardizes the future of its technological expansion in one of its most important global markets.

The next phase is expected to witness an escalation in the confrontation between Brussels and major technology companies. Particular attention will be paid to applications with a wide user base, such as WhatsApp. This comes amidst a fierce global race to dominate artificial intelligence technologies.
