Washington, DC – US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he had a “great” conversation with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. This move signals an escalation in US diplomatic efforts to reach a political solution in Syria.

Trump told reporters that the meeting focused on strengthening dialogue between Washington and Damascus. At this time, the US is seeking to solidify the ceasefire between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), its former main ally, and the Syrian government, which has recently become a preferred partner for Washington.

This conversation comes amid intensified US efforts to reduce tensions in the region, particularly given the ongoing internal conflicts in Syria, which have caused major humanitarian crises over the past years. Trump also emphasized the importance of finding a long-term political solution that guarantees stability in northern and eastern Syria and promotes cooperation between the warring parties to reduce violence and improve the situation for civilians.

Syria is currently undergoing political and military transformations. Washington’s priorities in dealing with local forces have shifted from supporting Kurdish forces to strengthening cooperation with the legitimate government led by al-Sharaa. In this context, the US is attempting to maintain its strategic interests in the region. It also aims to prevent any escalation that threatens the stability of the borders with neighboring countries.

Observers believe that the meeting between Trump and al-Sharaa may pave the way for further diplomatic contacts between the United States and Syria. These contacts could be a prelude to broader negotiations encompassing security, relief, and reconstruction issues. The meeting also highlights the desire of both sides to reach understandings that reduce armed conflicts and open the door to future cooperation on sensitive regional issues.

This conversation confirms that the current US administration continues to prioritize diplomatic solutions in the Middle East. At the same time, it seeks to reduce the role of non-state actors in local conflicts and is working to strengthen the Syrian state’s role in crisis management.
