Khartoum, Sudan – Fears of land mine and unexploded ordnance (UXO) have resurfaced in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum,
after two people were seriously injured when a landmine exploded under their vehicle in the Al-Azouzab area south of the city.
This latest incident underscores the ongoing threat to residents months after fighting ceased in some areas.
According to local sources, the explosion occurred on Saturday as the vehicle was traveling on a local road.
The two injured individuals sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Warnings of the spread of landmines
Warnings are mounting about the widespread presence of landmines and UXO in residential neighborhoods.
Since August 2025, several explosions in various parts of Khartoum have killed or injured approximately 44 people.
Among them were eight people killed during a funeral procession in the Al-Kadru area north of the capital last September,
highlighting the serious security and humanitarian situation caused by the remnants of war.
UN estimates indicate that approximately 80 percent of Khartoum may be contaminated with landmines or unexploded ordnance.
The UN also reports that more than 10 percent of the projectiles used during the war have not yet detonated,
making them ticking time bombs that threaten the lives of civilians,
especially those returning to their homes after prolonged displacement.
38million tons of war debris
The amount of war debris in the capital is estimated at around 38 million tons,
spread across an area of approximately 22,000 square kilometers.
This places an additional burden on recovery and reconstruction efforts,
in addition to posing environmental and health risks, including the spread of toxic substances resulting from explosives and destroyed buildings.
The UN warns that the danger of unexploded ordnance will persist for years to come
unless comprehensive mine clearance programs are implemented, awareness campaigns are intensified,
and residential areas are secured to ensure a safe and stable return for the residents of the Sudanese capital.
