Paris, France – French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed on Friday the agreement paving the way for a ceasefire between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). He affirmed his country’s full support for the agreement’s implementation and success. This step is considered a significant development in the de-escalation process in Syria.
In a post on the X platform, Macron stated that France supports the agreement, which was reached following mediation efforts in which Paris participated alongside international and regional parties. He also emphasized the importance of adhering to its terms to contribute to reducing tensions and strengthening stability, particularly in northeastern Syria.
The Syrian government and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced a comprehensive ceasefire agreement. The agreement includes a mechanism for the gradual integration of SDF forces and administrative structures into Syrian state institutions. It aims to avert a large-scale battle that had been looming in the northeast of the country, and to prevent further loss of life and the serious humanitarian consequences that would ensue.
The agreement is seen as a pivotal step in the process of restructuring security and administrative arrangements in the region. This comes amidst the complexities of the Syrian landscape and the overlapping of regional and international interests. The agreement was welcomed by the United States, which described it as a “historic achievement.” The US stated that it could pave the way for a new phase of de-escalation and stabilization.
Diplomatic sources confirmed that France views the agreement as an opportunity to bolster political solutions and push the Syrian parties toward a path that guarantees the country’s unity and territorial integrity. France is focused on combating terrorism and improving the humanitarian situation for the population affected by years of conflict.
The French position comes within the context of increasing international efforts to support de-escalation initiatives in Syria. In parallel, there are repeated calls to revive the political process, in accordance with international resolutions. These efforts aim to fulfill the Syrian people’s aspirations for security and stability and to end the suffering that has persisted for more than a decade.
