Europe – The European Union strongly condemned the Israeli authorities’ decision to demolish the headquarters of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in East Jerusalem. It considered the move a serious violation of international law and a direct attack on the sanctity of UN premises. This also constitutes a breach of Israel’s obligations under the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service said that UN member states are legally obligated to protect and respect the premises of the international organization and its agencies. The spokesperson stressed that this action represents a clear violation of these obligations and undermines the foundations of the multilateral international system.

The statement affirmed that the European Union continues its unwavering support for the United Nations, of which UNRWA is an essential part. The EU reiterated its full commitment to the principles of the UN Charter and international law, and to the role of UN agencies in protecting human rights and promoting international peace and security.

The European Union stressed its commitment to continuing its political and financial support for UNRWA. It explained that the agency is a key pillar in providing humanitarian assistance, education, and healthcare services to millions of Palestinian refugees in the occupied Palestinian territory. The EU also highlighted the agency’s role in East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip.

The statement noted that the continued, unimpeded operation of UNRWA is vital to meeting urgent humanitarian needs. Furthermore, it contributes to alleviating the suffering of the civilian population and plays a crucial role in supporting regional stability amidst the current tense situation in the region.

The European position comes at a time of escalating international and regional condemnation of Israeli actions against UN institutions in Jerusalem. The statement added that there are warnings that undermining UNRWA’s work would deepen the humanitarian crisis, jeopardize peace prospects, and increase instability in the occupied Palestinian territory.
