Cairo, Egypt – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi expressed his appreciation for the message from US President Donald Trump. He praised Trump’s commendable efforts in consolidating peace and stability at both the regional and international levels. He also commended the message’s recognition of Egypt’s pivotal role in supporting security and stability in the region.
In a post on his official Facebook page, President Sisi stated that he also appreciates President Trump’s attention to the centrality of the Nile River issue for Egypt. He emphasized that the river is the lifeblood of the Egyptian people. Furthermore, he stressed that Cairo is committed to serious and constructive cooperation with the Nile Basin countries. This cooperation is based on the principles of international law. It is done in a manner that achieves shared interests without harming any party. These are the constants upon which the Egyptian position is founded.
Continuing joint work
President El-Sisi explained that he sent a letter to his American counterpart expressing his gratitude and appreciation. In addition, he reaffirmed Egypt’s position and concerns regarding water security. He emphasized Egypt’s support for President Trump’s efforts. He added that he looks forward to continued close cooperation in the coming period.
US President Donald Trump had sent a letter to President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, the contents of which he published on his Truth Social account. In it, he praised President El-Sisi’s role in reaching a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. He also commended his efforts in managing the security and humanitarian challenges the region has faced since October 7, 2013.
A fair and lasting solution
Trump’s letter included an American offer to resume mediation between Egypt and Ethiopia regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) crisis. He emphasized the United States’ understanding of the vital importance of the Nile River to Egypt and its people. He also expressed the United States’ readiness to work toward a fair and lasting solution that addresses the long-term water needs of Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia.
In his letter, the US president stressed that no country should unilaterally control the Nile’s resources or harm its neighbors. He expressed his belief that fair and transparent negotiations, supported by technical expertise and an active US role in monitoring and coordination, could lead to a comprehensive agreement that guarantees predictable water flows for Egypt and Sudan during periods of drought. At the same time, this agreement would enable Ethiopia to generate electricity.
Trump concluded his letter by emphasizing the importance of resolving the disputes surrounding the GERD to avoid any potential military conflict. He expressed his appreciation for the relationship and partnership he shares with President Sisi and the Egyptian people.
