Tel Aviv, Israel – Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar called on the European Union to take a decisive step
by designating the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps as a “terrorist organization”.
He also affirmed Israel’s full support for the popular protests currently taking place in Iran.
Foreign Ministry move towards Europe
The Israeli foreign minister’s remarks came during talks he held Sunday with German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt.
The Israeli foreign minister explained that he had informed the German side
that “the time has come to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps
as a terrorist organization within the European Union.”
Saar pointed out that this position is in line with long-standing German trends, saying:
“This has been Germany’s position for a long time, and today the importance of this issue is clear to everyone.”
This is in reference to the role played by the Revolutionary Guard in suppressing internal dissent and destabilizing the region.
A message of support for the protesters
Regarding the protests that erupted in Iran due to deteriorating living conditions and demands for change,
Saar announced that Israel stands with the protesters, saying:
“We support the Iranian people’s struggle for freedom and wish them success.”
Saar described the popular movements in Iranian cities as “a legitimate struggle for freedom”.
He believed that the success of this struggle would change the face of the region.
