Washington, DC – The US military, represented by US Central Command (CENTCOM), announced on Friday, January 9, 2026, that there has been no change to the composition or deployment of US forces in the Middle East region. This announcement came despite the escalating widespread anti-government protests in the Iranian capital, Tehran, and several other cities.

Highlights
  • Official confirmations and routine actions
  • Anticipation for “Tehran Friday”

Official confirmations and routine actions

Fox News quoted a senior US official confirming that the US military posture in the region remains stable. The official emphasized that there have been no troop increases or extraordinary combat preparations in response to the ongoing developments in Iran. He explained that the arrival of a squadron of F-15E fighter jets in the region is part of a pre-planned, routine rotation. This does not constitute an increase in military capabilities or a change in combat readiness levels. He added that the Middle East currently has no US aircraft carriers, while the USS Ford remains deployed in the Caribbean.

Anticipation for “Tehran Friday”

The US Central Command, along with intelligence agencies in Washington, is closely monitoring developments on the ground in Iran. This is particularly true given the calls for widespread demonstrations after Friday prayers, in what has become known in the media as “Tehran Friday.” This day is seen as a crucial test of how the Iranian authorities will handle the protesters. It could also mark a turning point in the protests that have been ongoing since the beginning of this year. These popular movements initially stemmed from economic and human rights demands before spreading to several Iranian cities. This is all happening amidst escalating anti-government slogans.
