Washington, D.C. – The United Nations has warned of worsening climate conditions in the Horn of Africa. It confirmed that the region is experiencing one of its most severe droughts in recent years, putting millions of people at serious risk of food and water shortages.
UN reports indicate that the significant decline in rainfall and rising temperatures have led to the drying up of water sources. Agricultural lands have deteriorated considerably. Furthermore, large numbers of livestock have perished. This has exacerbated the food security crisis, particularly in rural and pastoral communities.
The United Nations stressed that the continuation of these conditions without urgent intervention could lead to a large-scale humanitarian crisis. It called on the international community to increase aid and accelerate relief programs to prevent further suffering for the population in one of the world’s most fragile regions.
