Brussels, Belgium – The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, announced new measures targeting what is known as Russia’s “shadow fleet.” This came ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday.

Callas said the European Union will approve a new package of sanctions against Russia. These sanctions include adding 40 ships suspected of belonging to the “shadow fleet,” as well as imposing measures on support assets linked to these ships, according to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

Targeting Russian revenues

The European Union considers the “shadow fleet” one of Russia’s main sources of revenue, as it is used to transport Russian oil outside the scope of price ceilings and Western sanctions.

The issue of countering this fleet, with the aim of harming the Russian economy, was a key focus of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting held on November 20 in Brussels.

Callas had previously stated that EU countries were also considering seizing oil tankers. Brussels says they are part of this fleet. This new measure is a concrete step to increase economic pressure on Moscow.
