Medellín, Colombia – A school bus carrying students in Colombia turned into a tragedy when it plunged down a steep mountain slope in the state of Antioquia. The accident resulted in the deaths of 17 people and injuries to approximately 20 others.

Local sources reported that the bus was traveling on a narrow mountain road as it returned from the coastal area of Tulu. The students had been on a celebratory trip to mark their graduation when the bus lost control and plunged approximately 80 meters into a deep ravine.

Emergency and ambulance crews rushed to the scene immediately after the accident was reported. The injured were treated at the scene and transported to several nearby hospitals. Meanwhile, rescue teams began complex operations to recover the victims from the rugged terrain.

The relevant authorities confirmed that an urgent investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident. Initial indications suggest a sudden malfunction or extreme driver fatigue, leading to a loss of control of the vehicle. The final cause will be determined after the completion of the technical examination.

In its first official statement, the Antioquia state government expressed its deep sorrow over the accident and offered condolences to the victims’ families. It emphasized that student transportation safety would be thoroughly reviewed in the coming period.

The incident has reignited recurring concerns about the safety of Colombia’s mountain roads. These concerns are particularly heightened by the increasing number of group trips. There are calls for enhanced safety measures and oversight of public transportation.
