Tehran, Iran – The deputy spokesman for the Taliban’s foreign ministry announced that the movement considers the regional meeting on the crisis with Pakistan in Tehran unnecessary, and for this reason will not participate in it.
Tehran had previously confirmed the issue of mediation between the Taliban and Pakistan.
It is not on the agenda of the upcoming regional meeting on Afghanistan in Tehran.
She stressed that the purpose of the meeting was limited to exchanging views between representatives of the countries concerned.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister and Director General for South Asia at the Foreign Ministry, Mohammad Reza Bahrami, said the meeting aimed to provide a space for exchanging views.
He presented the views of the special representatives of neighboring countries on developments in the situation in Afghanistan.
He noted that the issue of mediation between Islamabad and the Taliban was not on the meeting’s agenda.
Strengthening “mutual understanding” between Afghanistan and Pakistan
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei had previously confirmed
Tehran will host a regional meeting next week to discuss developments related to Afghanistan.
He expressed hope that the meeting would contribute to strengthening regional rapprochement and help reduce tensions.
Iranian media quoted Bahrami as saying that Iran seeks, through this meeting, to promote “mutual understanding”.
This concerns developments related to Afghanistan, and creating a constructive atmosphere for consultation among the countries of the region.
The Iranian official added that Afghanistan is capable of playing an important role in connecting the region and supporting economic development.
He emphasized the importance of strengthening regional security, noting that neighboring countries share common interests in this regard.
Iran had previously announced its readiness to play a mediating role.
This is between the Taliban and Pakistan, amid escalating tensions between the two sides.
