Paris, France – French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez announced on Friday that the ministry’s email servers were the target of a cyberattack this week, confirming that an investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances of the incident.
“There was a cyberattack,” Nunez told RTL radio. “One of the attackers managed to access a number of files, [but] there is no evidence that they were seriously compromised.”
The French minister added that the authorities took precautionary measures immediately after discovering the breach: “We have put in place protective measures. We have tightened the conditions for accessing the computer system for our personnel… An investigation is currently underway.”
Agence France-Presse reported that French authorities have not yet provided any indications as to the source of the cyberattack that targeted the ministry’s sensitive infrastructure.
