Yangon, Myanmar – The Myanmar military launched airstrikes on the central hospital in Mrauk-U, a town near the Bangladeshi border in Rakhine State. Dozens of casualties were reported.

According to data published by Haber Global, reports indicate that 33 people were killed and at least 76 others injured in the attack. Among the dead were healthcare workers.

The military government in Myanmar, which seized power in a military coup in February 2021, has not issued any official statement regarding this attack.

Background to the Coup and Conflict

This attack comes in the context of the ongoing conflict in Myanmar since the military seized power on February 1, 2021, following allegations of election rigging. Since then, armed resistance, internal conflicts, and the bloody suppression of peaceful opposition protests have resulted in the deaths of approximately 6,000 people since 2021, in addition to the displacement of nearly 3 million people.

The country’s de facto leader and foreign minister, Aung San Suu Kyi, and several other officials from the ruling party remain in military detention. The military declared a year-long state of emergency following the coup.
