Jakarta, Indonesia – In an unprecedented humanitarian tragedy, Indonesian authorities have announced a rising death toll from the devastating floods and mudslides that struck several provinces in recent days. Search and rescue operations continue in areas still isolated by submerged roads and destroyed bridges.

According to official figures, the death toll has risen to over 700, with hundreds still missing. Rescue teams expect the numbers to increase as search operations expand in the heavily damaged mountainous and rural areas.

The disaster management agency said record rainfall in a short period caused dozens of homes to collapse and entire villages to be swept away. Thousands of families were moved to temporary shelters lacking basic supplies.

Authorities are continuing evacuating residents in arduous efforts using boats and helicopters amidst turbulent weather. Meanwhile, emergency teams are working to restore electricity and communication services that have been cut off across large areas.

These floods are among the worst in the country’s history. Meteorologists are warning of more heavy rain in the coming days, raising fears that the disaster could worsen.
