Beirut, Lebanon – Hezbollah on Saturday called on Pope Francis to take a clear stance against what it described as “Israeli aggression” on Lebanese territory. This comes ahead of the pontiff’s anticipated visit to Beirut, at a time when tensions have been escalating on the southern border for months.

The party explained in a statement that “the ongoing Israeli aggression against Lebanon requires the Vatican to raise its voice for justice. It also condemned the violations targeting civilians and infrastructure.” It noted that the Pope’s visit is “a historic opportunity to send a humanitarian and moral message to the world, calling for an end to the attacks and respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty.”

This call comes amid renewed sporadic clashes between Hezbollah fighters and the Israeli army along the border. There are fears that the confrontations could escalate. It also coincides with intensive Lebanese diplomatic efforts to secure a peaceful visit by the Pope. This visit is hoped to reinforce the message of stability and coexistence in the country.

The party stressed that Lebanon “is facing a critical phase that requires international solidarity and political support.” It noted that any statement issued by the Pope “will have a significant impact at both the regional and international levels.”

Political and religious circles are awaiting an official announcement from the Vatican regarding the visit’s program and dates. Meanwhile, logistical and security preparations are underway in the Lebanese capital. These preparations are in anticipation of Pope Francis’s first visit to Lebanon in years.
