Milan, Italy – Six current and former employees of the Milan City Council, Italy’s second-largest city, are under investigation by the public prosecutor’s office on serious charges of theft and receiving stolen goods. They are suspected of stealing gold and jewelry from corpses. In addition, there is a bizarre case involving the theft of a set of dentures from a woman who died in a car accident.

Highlights
  • A series of robberies from the morgue and homes
  • Track receipts and confiscate devices

The newspapers “Il Corriere”, “La Repubblica” and “Il Giorno” published details of the case that shook Italian public opinion.

A series of robberies from the morgue and homes

The six employees (two of whom recently resigned) work in the municipality’s funeral and cemetery services department. The investigation began last year after a relative of the deceased reported to the municipality that jewelry was missing from his relative’s body.

The investigation, coordinated by Deputy Police Chief Bruna Albertini and Prosecutor Antonio Cristello, led to the uncovering of a series of thefts. These thefts occurred in the morgue refrigerators in Piazza Gorini, and in the homes of the deceased themselves.

Track receipts and confiscate devices

The police special intervention team was able to reconstruct six robbery incidents. There is also the possibility that several other incidents occurred before the initial reports.

The six employees allegedly sold the stolen necklaces, earrings, and bracelets at various jewelry stores in Milan and the surrounding area. Officers were able to trace receipts issued to the suspects on dates that coincided with the thefts.

Currently, a search and seizure operation is underway involving the mobile phones and computers of the six suspects between Milan and Lodi. This is being carried out as part of the ongoing investigation.
