Afghan authorities are continuing rescue efforts after a devastating earthquake struck several regions in recent hours. According to initial official figures, the earthquake has killed 20 people and injured more than 320 others.

Emergency teams reported that the earthquakes caused dozens of homes and buildings to collapse. Rescue teams are working to pull victims from the rubble. There are fears the death toll could rise as search operations continue in remote areas.

The country has experienced a series of powerful earthquakes in recent months, raising fears of a repeat of the humanitarian disaster in a country already suffering from weak infrastructure and a lack of medical and relief resources.
