Rome, Italy – In a move described as an unprecedented historical reform, the Italian government announced the abolition of the “citizenship by blood” principle,
which automatically granted citizenship to the children of Italians around the world based on family origin.
The decision opens the door to a new, more modern and equitable system,
based on the principle of “actual belonging to the land and society”.
Citizenship is granted to anyone who was born or lived in Italy
for a specific period of time, regardless of ethnic origin or parentage.
Rome stressed that the amendment aims to promote social integration
and keep pace with demographic changes.
She argued that Italian identity today is built on participation
and shared values, not on genetic ties.
Observers believe the decision reflects a radical shift in the philosophy of national belonging.
This places Italy among the European countries that have adopted
the approach of “citizenship by participation” instead of “citizenship by blood”.
