Rome, Italy – Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala has announced his support for imposing an additional tax on short-term rentals in the city. He believes that regulating this phenomenon serves the public interest. In an interview with RTL 102.5 radio, Sala stated, “There are 30,000 apartments in Milan that are not available for long-term rent. Platforms like Airbnb have made astronomical profits in recent years. We live in a free market economy, but policy must be wise.”

The mayor added: “No one is against tourism, of course, but it needs to be regulated a little, because excessive tourism harms communities. Our country shouldn’t become the Disneyland of the world.”

Sala also addressed the issue of security in the city, noting the increased number of patrols conducted by the municipality. He emphasized the crucial role of the Carabinieri and the police in maintaining public safety. He further stressed the importance of enhanced camera surveillance and preventative measures. He considers security a fundamental human right that must be upheld despite the challenges.
