Japan – In a symbolic gesture expressing the deep historical ties and spirit of friendship between the Japanese and American peoples, the Japanese government announced the donation of 250 cherry trees to Washington, D.C., to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
The initiative renews a diplomatic tradition dating back more than a century. Tokyo donated the first batch of cherry trees to Washington in 1912. Since then, they have become a symbol of peace and rapprochement between the two countries. The US capital is also adorned every spring with the famous Cherry Blossom Festival.
