ROME, Italy – The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) recorded a 3.1-magnitude earthquake in the Campi Flegrei volcanic area, west of Naples, shortly before 1 a.m. yesterday.

The institute reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was five kilometers east of the city of Pozzuoli, at a depth of only two kilometers. So far, no damage or injuries have been reported as a result of this tremor.

This activity comes amid increased seismic activity in the area surrounding the Campi Flegrei volcano. This volcano last erupted lava, ash, and rocks in 1538. The area is densely populated, with approximately half a million people living there.
