Tehran, Iran – The Iranian Foreign Ministry stressed in an official statement issued on Saturday that the Iranian nuclear issue must be removed from the UN Security Council’s agenda under the “non-proliferation” item.

Highlights
  • Sharp criticism of Europe and Washington
  • Condemning the US and Israeli attacks
  • Russian, Chinese and regional support
  • Araqchi officially informs the United Nations of the expiration of the resolution.
  • Commitment to diplomacy…and a warning against escalation

Considering that Iran’s nuclear program should be treated like any other program of a non-nuclear-weapon member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

This Iranian escalation came in the context of Tehran’s announcement of the expiration of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, issued in 2015. The resolution endorsed the nuclear agreement signed between Iran and the major powers.

Tehran considered all restrictions and mechanisms associated with the resolution to be null and void as of today, in accordance with its provisions.

Sharp criticism of Europe and Washington

Iran has sharply criticized the three European countries – France, Germany, and Britain – accusing them of “abusing the dispute resolution mechanism” in the nuclear agreement. It also claimed that their actions were directed by the United States, and considered these steps “legally invalid and of no effect.”

Condemning the US and Israeli attacks

In a related context, the Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned what it described as “Israeli and American military attacks” on its territory and peaceful nuclear facilities, considering them a “serious violation of international law and the mechanisms of the nuclear nonproliferation regime.”

The statement affirmed that Tehran reserves the right to respond, and considers any targeting of its nuclear sites or territory a blatant violation of Iranian sovereignty and international law.

Russian, Chinese and regional support

Tehran expressed its appreciation for the positions of Russia, China, and the Non-Aligned Movement member states. These countries, according to the statement, rejected unilateral actions by European countries and supported Iran’s right to develop its peaceful nuclear program within the framework of the treaty.

Araqchi officially informs the United Nations of the expiration of the resolution.

In an official move, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi informed the United Nations that Resolution 2231 had expired. He confirmed that all previous sanctions associated with it had expired legally as of October 18, 2025.

Araghchi stressed that the three European countries’ attempts to revive the snapback mechanism to reimpose sanctions “lack any legal or legitimate basis.” He also asserted that the UN Secretariat is not authorized to interpret or reactivate expired resolutions.

Araghchi also strongly criticized the United States’ withdrawal from the nuclear agreement in 2018 and its imposition of unilateral sanctions, considering them a violation of international law. He also held European countries responsible for their failure to fulfill their obligations under the nuclear agreement.

ؤHe pointed out that 121 Non-Aligned Movement member states recognized the expiration of the resolution, adding that the Security Council has not issued any new resolution to reactivate the previous sanctions.

Commitment to diplomacy…and a warning against escalation

The Iranian Foreign Minister concluded his statement by emphasizing that Iran remains committed to the diplomatic path, but at the same time rejects any attempt to restore previous restrictions or extend expired resolutions. He considers this an “infringement on the legitimate rights of the Iranian people.”
