Brasilia, Brazil – Brazil is experiencing an unprecedented health emergency. This follows at least 59 cases of methanol poisoning recorded as a result of consuming adulterated alcoholic beverages. This crisis has sparked public panic and put health and security authorities on alert.

Brazilian Health Minister Alexandre Padilha said in an urgent press conference that the number of infections includes both confirmed and suspected cases. He added that laboratory tests have confirmed the presence of methanol in 11 confirmed cases so far. This is according to the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper.

Monitor the situation

To address the escalating threat, the government announced the establishment of a “central operations room” in the capital, Brasilia, to monitor the situation around the clock. This is being done in partnership with the ministries of health, justice, public security, and agriculture. They are also working with oversight bodies.

Authorities revealed they have begun distributing medical ethanol to federal university hospitals as a rapid treatment option for methanol poisoning. This prevents methanol from converting to highly toxic formic acid, which can cause serious complications, including blindness or death.

The Ministry of Health also announced its intention to import the drug “Fomepizole,” which is on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines. This drug is used worldwide as an effective treatment for acute methanol poisoning. However, it is rarely used in Brazil.

Concerns have grown over the proliferation of unregulated, unregulated alcoholic beverages in the market, containing dangerous levels of methanol. This has prompted the government to issue urgent warnings to citizens and intensify security campaigns to arrest producers and distributors.

Medical reports warn that methanol poisoning can cause fatal symptoms. These include dizziness, loss of vision, convulsions, and respiratory arrest, if the victim does not receive prompt treatment.

The country is currently experiencing a health crisis and widespread public concern. Government efforts are underway to contain the “adulterated alcohol disaster.” They aim to prevent it from escalating into a national crisis that threatens the lives of thousands.
