London, Britain – The British government has updated its website maps, which previously referred to the “Occupied Palestinian Territories”, to include “Palestine” instead.
In an early reference to the changes that occurred as a result of the recognition, some Ministry of Foreign Affairs electronic pages changed the name to “Palestine”.
These changes appear on pages providing travel advice to Israel and Palestine, and in the list of State Department missions abroad.
It also appears on official maps of the region.
This came after Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced official recognition of the Palestinian state.
This move coincided with similar confessions from Canada, Australia and Portugal.
It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Starmer announced, on Sunday, Britain’s official recognition of the State of Palestine.
“In the face of escalating terror in the Middle East, we are working to preserve the possibility of peace and a two-state solution,” he said at a press conference.
He added: “Hamas cannot have a future, a role in the government, or a role in security in any Palestinian state.”
With this recognition, Britain became the third country from the Group of Seven major countries to recognize a Palestinian state, after Canada and Australia.
This step came a day before a conference held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings, co-chaired by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and France.
Several countries, led by France, are expected to announce their recognition of Palestine.
