Cairo, Egypt – Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz today threatened Hamas with expanding its military offensive on the Gaza Strip. He emphasized that the continued hostage-taking and arms buildup will be met with a comprehensive escalation, targeting infrastructure and populated areas.

Highlights
  • Destroying infrastructure and promoting safe transportation
  • Expansion of ground operations and escalation of shelling
  • Mass displacement amid fears of a lack of safe shelter
  • International context
  • Possible scenario

Destroying infrastructure and promoting safe transportation

Katz indicated that ground military operations had begun. The command of the field divisions was tasked with carrying out attacks on strategic targets. He explained that 25 towers in the northern Gaza Strip had been destroyed. In addition, sniper attempts and targeting of vital installations had been thwarted.

The Israeli minister called on Gaza residents to move south. He confirmed that the army had opened a “temporary transit route” via Salah al-Din Street, extending from the north of the Strip to the south, for 48 hours. The goal is to facilitate the movement of civilians away from combat zones.

Expansion of ground operations and escalation of shelling

This comes as the Israeli military expands its ground operations. It has also increased its airstrikes on more than 150 targets in recent days. These targets include Hamas sites, weapons depots, and command centers. This escalation reflects Tel Aviv’s firm stance of not negotiating until its conditions are met. This comes amid international warnings of a escalating humanitarian catastrophe.

Mass displacement amid fears of a lack of safe shelter

The United Nations estimates the population of Gaza City and its surrounding areas at approximately one million. Some 350,000 people have been displaced in recent days, either on foot or by available means of transportation. They are seeking safe shelter. However, many still refuse to leave, citing a lack of shelter and lack of safety guarantees. These conditions are exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.

International context

Political and international pressure continues to mount for a ceasefire. There are calls from the United Nations and the international community to protect civilians and prevent human rights violations. Reports from some organizations describe the violations as amounting to “genocide.” Nevertheless, the Israeli leadership appears to be adhering to its military plan, emphasizing that a ceasefire will only be achieved after the release of hostages and the surrender of weapons.

Possible scenario

Observers point out that the expansion of ground operations and the opening of displacement routes could exacerbate the humanitarian crisis. Meanwhile, the international community is pressuring Israel and Hamas to de-escalate and reach an urgent settlement. The goal is to end the tragedy of civilians in Gaza.
