Barak: Disarming Hezbollah is not necessarily "military"

Beirut, Lebanon – The US Special Envoy to Syria and Lebanon, Thomas Brack, announced on Tuesday that Lebanon will present a plan on August 31 aimed at convincing Hezbollah to give up its weapons.

Barak added after his meeting with the Lebanese President in Beirut that the Lebanese proposal “will not necessarily be of a military nature”.

He pointed out that Israel, in turn, will submit a “reward proposal” as soon as it receives the Lebanese plan.

Barak added: “Israel’s response was historic and they will respond step by step, and Hezbollah should not arm itself against them”.

The US envoy stressed that Iran is a source of funding for the party.

He pointed out that Washington seeks to provide alternatives to Lebanon by “involving the Gulf states and opening new horizons within an economic zone”.

Barak stressed that “no one wants to enter into a civil war in Lebanon.”

Earlier this month, the Lebanese Council of Ministers announced the decision to disarm Hezbollah and other armed factions.

The party rejected repeated calls to disarm, especially after its war with Israel in late 2024, which left widespread destruction in Lebanon.

A US-brokered ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel in November ended that round of conflict.

The ceasefire included a call for Lebanon to confiscate all “unauthorized” weapons across the country.

It also included Israel stopping its attacks against Lebanese targets.

However, Israel has maintained forces in five locations in Lebanon and continued to launch airstrikes against what it says are Hezbollah fighters or military facilities affiliated with the group.
