Moscow, Russia – Grief has descended upon the Russian art scene today, Thursday, with the announcement of the death of the popular Russian artist

and veteran actress Vera Alentova at the age of 83.

This comes after a prolific artistic career spanning decades

that has immortalized her name in the memory of world cinema.

The Pushkin Theatre mourns

The Pushkin Theatre in Moscow, where the late actress began her career and rose to fame,

announced her death in a moving statement:

“A great tragedy has befallen us… Vera Valentinovna Alentova has passed away.

She worked at the Pushkin Theatre for 60 years, and our grief is indescribable.”

The theater indicated that the date and location of Vera’s farewell party will be announced at a later time.

A remarkable journey from “Kotlas” to the pinnacle of glory

Alentova was born on February 21, 1942 in the city of Kotlas in the Arkhangelsk region.

Her academic journey began at the Moscow Art Theatre School, from which she graduated in 1965,

immediately joining the Pushkin Theatre Company.

Vera did not limit herself to acting, but passed on her experiences to new generations,

as she has headed the acting and directing workshop at the prestigious

Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) since 2009.

“Moscow does not believe in tears”… The immortal role that earned Alentova widespread international fame.

Vera played the role of “Katerina Tikhomirova” in the iconic film “Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears” (1979).

Directed by her late husband, Vladimir Menshov

The film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film,

becoming one of the most important classics of Soviet cinema.

An indelible mark

She also left an indelible mark on many other notable works, including: “Tomorrow Was the War” (1987).

Also, Shirley Mirley (1995), The Envy of the Gods (2000), The Age of Balzac, or All Men Are Scoundrels… (2004).

With the passing of Vera Alentova, the Russian art scene loses one of the last giants of the “golden age”

Those who, through their sincere performances, were able to touch the hearts of millions around the world.
