AFP – The Mexican sailing ship “Cuatuamoc”, which crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge in New York last May, returned to Mexico on Sunday as part of an official ceremony to commemorate the historic event.
The ship had its three masts destroyed during the collision, which occurred on May 17.
It resulted in a number of injuries and the death of two people, while passersby were enjoying a spring evening in the American city.
The American investigation revealed that the authorities did not handle the incident in the ideal way, which contributed to exacerbating the extent of the damage.
Consolidating Mexican independence
During the celebration of the ship’s return, Mexico launched a campaign under the slogan “Consolidating Mexico’s independence at sea”.
This is in reference to the anniversary of the surrender of Spanish forces at the San Juan de Ulloa fortress in 1825.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum delivered a speech from the ship’s platform.
She emphasized honoring the two victims and considering their sacrifices as engraved in the memory of the Mexican people.
