Tokyo, Japan – In an unprecedented move, the Japanese government announced it would deploy the military to combat the increasing number of wild bear attacks

Highlights
  • Monitoring bear movements
  • violent bear attacks
  • A danger to the lives of citizens
  • Fears of the phenomenon worsening

in several northern regions, following a record rise in the number of incidents.

Which has resulted in the death and injury of dozens of people over the past months.

Monitoring bear movements

Japanese media outlets, including AE24, reported that local authorities in Hokkaido

and other mountainous regions have requested military support

from the Japanese Self-Defense Forces.

This is to help the police and environmental authorities monitor

the movements of bears and keep them away from residential areas.

Especially after it repeatedly approached villages and farms.

violent bear attacks

This decision comes after a series of violent attacks by bears in the country this year.

The number of incidents recorded so far has exceeded 200 cases,

the highest tally since the phenomenon began to be documented.

Environmental reports attribute the cause to the decline in food

sources in forests as a result of climate change.

What drives bears to approach human gatherings in search of food.

A danger to the lives of citizens

Officials at the Japanese Ministry of the Environment explained

that the cooperation with the military aims to enhance rapid response capabilities.

This is done by using drones and aerial surveillance to locate bears

and warn residents before any potential attacks occur.

The government is also considering amending wildlife protection laws

To allow for stricter measures against bears.

Which poses a danger to the lives of citizens.

Fears of the phenomenon worsening

Experts believe that resorting to the army reflects growing fears

that the phenomenon will worsen with the arrival of winter,

when animals move more in search of food.

They pointed out that Japan faces a new environmental

and security challenge that requires a balance

between protecting people and preserving natural diversity.
