Voice of the Emirates – The World Health Organization has warned of the escalating risk of antibiotic-resistant bacteria spreading, confirming that the Eastern Mediterranean region has the highest global ranking in drug-resistant cases, according to a recent report issued hours ago.
The organization revealed that this phenomenon poses a direct threat to healthcare systems, particularly in countries with weak antibiotic prescription controls and easy access to antibiotics without medical supervision. It noted that overuse of antibiotics, poor treatment practices, and non-compliance with dosages have contributed to the rapid increase in antibiotic resistance rates in recent years.
The World Health Organization stressed that confronting this crisis requires strict national plans, including rationalizing the prescription of antibiotics, promoting community awareness, and developing accurate laboratory surveillance programs to monitor resistant strains, warning that the continuation of the current situation may threaten the effectiveness of many vital treatments in the near future.
