Washington, USA – The United Arab Emirates participated in the Sudan Donors Conference hosted by the United States, with Her Excellency Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, Minister of State, heading the UAE delegation, and announcing the country’s commitment to providing US$500 million to support urgent humanitarian needs in Sudan.

Highlights
  • The lives of 30 million Sudanese are threatened
  • Politicizing humanitarian aid

The lives of 30 million Sudanese are threatened

Her Excellency Nusseibeh said that the current crisis threatens the lives of more than 30 million Sudanese, which is more than half of the country’s population, noting that this contribution represents the UAE’s commitment to ensuring that essential, life-saving aid reaches civilians affected by the ongoing civil war.

She added that the UAE’s support comes in parallel with the US contribution, and reflects a shared commitment to ensuring the provision of effective and urgent assistance in light of the difficult humanitarian conditions.

Her Excellency praised the international efforts supporting the Sudanese people, including the role of Tom Fletcher, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, as well as the collective efforts of the Quartet, which includes the United States, the United Kingdom, Norway and the European Union.

She stressed that the future of Sudan must be determined by its people through a transitional process led by an inclusive and independent civilian government, with the achievement of a permanent ceasefire and an end to the interference of extremist groups, including those associated with the Muslim Brotherhood.

Politicizing humanitarian aid

Her Excellency stressed the need to avoid politicizing humanitarian aid or using it as a weapon, while focusing on supporting women and survivors of gender-based violence, to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most.

This contribution comes as part of the UAE’s ongoing commitment to Sudan, where the value of humanitarian and development aid provided by the country over the past decade has exceeded US$4.24 billion, including US$800 million since 2023.

Following the conference, Her Excellency participated in a meeting of the Quartet with the US President’s Advisor on Arab and African Affairs and representatives from Saudi Arabia and Egypt, to strengthen international efforts to support peace and stability in Sudan.
