Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates – The National Center of Meteorology participates in the celebration of “World Tsunami Awareness Day”.
Which is being held this year under the slogan “Be Tsunami Prepared – Invest in Tsunami Preparedness”.
This aims to enhance community awareness of the seriousness of this natural phenomenon and raise the level of readiness to reduce its effects on lives and property.
Tsunamis are among the most dangerous natural disasters, as they can cause widespread destruction and serious human and material losses, in addition to their long-term environmental and social impacts.
This day, which was approved by the United Nations General Assembly to be November 5 of each year, comes to remind communities of the importance of awareness, advance preparedness, and rapid response when such disasters occur.
Dr. Abdullah Al-Mandous, President of the World Meteorological Organization and Director-General of the National Center of Meteorology, said that World Tsunami Awareness Day represents an important platform to highlight the vital role played by meteorological and earthquake bodies and centers and early warning centers around the world.
He pointed out the joint work to enhance regional coordination and cooperation and raise awareness among the population, especially in coastal areas exposed to tsunami risks, due to the serious economic, social and environmental impacts of this phenomenon.
He explained that investing in early warning systems, evacuation mapping, and implementing regular training is an effective approach to reducing human losses and protecting development gains in the long term.
He pointed out that community readiness and ongoing awareness contribute to enhancing communities’ resilience to natural disasters.

The Center is participating in a project to strengthen the tsunami early warning system for countries in the northwestern Indian Ocean.
In addition to his participation in regional workshops aimed at unifying operational concepts and procedures, strengthening evacuation plans, and the role of the media in disseminating warnings.
He is also keen to implement training and awareness programmes in cooperation with relevant national authorities.
IOWave25 is participating in the regional field exercise.
It is a tsunami simulation exercise that aims to raise community readiness and promote a culture of prevention and preparedness.
The center stressed that participation in the celebration of World Tsunami Awareness Day reflects the UAE’s commitment to protecting society and ensuring the safety of its residents in the face of natural disasters.
