Abu Dhabi, UAE – Travel experts and insurance rating companies have released their annual report on the safest countries to travel to in 2026, noting that the majority of the safest destinations are located in Europe. The UAE tops the list in the Middle East thanks to its strict laws and strong police force, which provide high levels of public order and safety for tourists.
The Netherlands topped the list thanks to its “peaceful” stance. It received high marks for its health and safety measures, as well as for protecting travelers of all backgrounds, including women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and people of color. The capital, Amsterdam, with its tulip fields and windmills, is considered the ideal destination for a safe tourist experience.
Australia came in second, attracting tourists with its modern cities and inland deserts. It boasts famous landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House, and the Great Barrier Reef.
Austria came in third, renowned for its capital Vienna, its palaces, art galleries, and the Alps that cover almost half the country. Iceland ranked fourth, thanks to its low crime rate and high quality of life. Canada came in fifth, particularly popular with skiers and its safe cities.
The list also included the top 15 safest countries to travel to in 2026: New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates, Switzerland, Japan, Ireland, Belgium, Portugal, France, the United Kingdom, and Denmark.
Travel insurance company Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection said: “Safety has changed for travelers. It is no longer just about crime rates. It now includes healthcare, climate stability, and social inclusion. This is what makes the Netherlands a standout model.”
