Coimbra, Portugal – His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated on Friday, in the presence of Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority, the Center for Arab Studies at the University of Coimbra — the first center in Portugal dedicated to teaching the Arabic language and culture, established within one of Europe’s oldest universities, founded in 1290.

Highlights
  • A Platform for Cultural Dialogue
  • Spotlight on a Historic Manuscript
  • “A Highly Important Journey”
  • Sustainable Cultural Cooperation

During the inauguration, His Highness launched the Joanina Digital Library, a project realized in collaboration with Sharjah, and signed his latest book “A Highly Important Journey”, published in three languages: Arabic, English, and Portuguese. He also gifted the Joanina Library the rare Barbosa Manuscript, dating back to 1565.

A Platform for Cultural Dialogue

The Ruler of Sharjah emphasized that the center will play a vital role in fostering cultural dialogue between East and West, praising Portuguese students’ dedication to learning Arabic with its rich heritage and artistic traditions. The center will offer advanced curricula in Arabic language and calligraphy, while also organizing forums and cultural events that bring together Arab and European intellectuals, thereby strengthening cultural exchange and deepening mutual understanding.

Spotlight on a Historic Manuscript

In his address at the inauguration ceremony held in the historic Joanina Library, His Highness spoke about his long journey in pursuit of the Barbosa Manuscript, written by the Portuguese officer Duarte Barbosa in the 16th century. He described it as a rare and honest historical testimony that accurately documented life in the Arabian Gulf region and its relations with newcomers. His Highness noted that the manuscript offered a fair portrayal of the people of the region and their achievements, contrasting with the destructive practices of Portuguese colonial powers at the time.

“A Highly Important Journey”

His Highness explained that publishing his book in three languages was intended to restore balance to historical memory by presenting the narrative as Barbosa had authentically recorded it. He stressed that knowledge, when rooted in truth, becomes a firm foundation for dialogue and building relations among nations.

Sustainable Cultural Cooperation

Concluding his speech, the Ruler of Sharjah officially announced the opening of the Center for Arab Studies, affirming that this milestone marks the beginning of teaching Arabic at the University of Coimbra and creates a new gateway to connect with Arab literature and thought. He further emphasized Sharjah’s continued support for cultural and academic projects that promote dialogue and cooperation between civilizations.
