Washington, DC – The US-China Economic and Security Review Commission warned in its latest report that Chinese President Xi Jinping is working to “build an alternative world order.” This order would be centered on Beijing, supported by close alliances with undemocratic states such as Russia and North Korea.

Highlights
  • Alliances supporting Beijing
  • Bigger picture

The committee, according to Axios, indicated that this strategic vision represents a profound shift in China’s ambitions on the international stage.

Importance:

The committee argues that the formation of a network of “beneficiary partners” who share common interests with China, despite their sometimes fierce competition, complicates the calculations of Washington and Western capitals. This includes dealing with Beijing.

According to the report, China is not only working to enhance its military or technological capabilities. It is also moving to build a parallel global system that could weaken the United States’ influence in international institutions.

The committee explains that China’s long-term plan spans multiple sectors. These sectors include the economy, trade, technology, energy, and information security. The goal is to reshape the rules of the global order to serve Beijing’s interests and political vision.

Alliances supporting Beijing

The report focuses on the growing cooperation between China and both Russia and North Korea. This cooperation encompasses areas such as arms deals, security coordination, and mutual political support. The report indicates that this new axis poses a direct challenge to the West.

The committee also notes that Beijing is leveraging its growing influence in the Global South through initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative. Beijing seeks to present itself as an alternative to Western models of development and governance.

Bigger picture

The committee warns that this Chinese approach is not limited to economic or strategic competition. It aims to reshape the entire structure of the international system, ensuring China’s continued rise and weakening Western leverage.

It recommends strengthening coordination between Washington and its allies, both in Europe and Asia, to confront the challenges posed by this new global model that Beijing seeks to establish.
